Sensitization And Awareness Creation On Agriculture Food & Nutrition Systems Transformation

We strengthened the capacity of key Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), academia, legislative bodies and other vital stakeholders under the Transformation of Agriculture and Food Systems (TAFS) Cluster of the Global Programme on Sustainable Agricultural Systems and Policies (AgSys) of GIZ. SEEDAN Support Project

We support the SEEDAN Support Project by strengthening the Nigerian seed system through enhanced governance, refined communication strategies, and capacity-building for SEEDAN members to deliver effective services across the seed subsector. We also developed and validated a five-year strategic plan for SEEDAN and will be providing guidance for its implementation, ensuring the platform can drive innovation, advocate for policies, and advance food security in Nigeria.

Strengthening the Enabling Environment for Food Fortification in Nigeria

We conducted extensive desk research and engaged key stakeholders in the food fortification landscape including government agencies, developmental organizations, international non-profit organizations, food processor associations and the private sector to conduct an in-depth analysis of food fortification in Nigeria. We provided recommendations for stakeholders in the sector, including the public and private sector actors, to improve adherence to mandatory food fortification.

Retrospective Evaluation of Scaling Associated with the Cassava Weed Management Project (CWMP)

We are assessing the extent of private sector scaling of effective herbicides tested during the implementation of the cassava weed management project and examining and examining how the collaboration between the project and the private sector influenced companies’ decisions to register and deploy herbicides.

Early Generation Seed Systems in Nigeria and Ghana

We led the USAID funded Early Generation Seed (EGS) systems study in Nigeria in partnership with Context Global Network. Sahel conducted an end-to-end analysis of seed systems of four key crops including maize, soybean, rice, and yam in Nigeria to identify constraints limiting the production of EGS in an economically viable and sustainable manner. The analysis covered the dominant seed systems, current EGS systems and potential demand and cost of EGS production in Nigeria. Sahel provided recommendations on how to create incentives for greater government and private investments in the seed sector.

Food Mapping Project commissioned by Palladium for the West African Food Markets (WAFM)

We conducted a food mapping study in Burkina Faso, Ghana, Niger and Nigeria focused on five value chains – rice, maize, cassava, sorghum and millet, providing information on the formal and informal trade trends, food reserves, policies, food security and crisis responses. The team also developed high-level recommendations for mini initiatives that WAFM could introduce to ease trade barriers and enhance food security.
